The 2nd National Congress of the Indonesian Association for Cultural Studies Runs Smoothly at UNS Solo
The 2nd National Congress (Musyawarah Nasional, or Munas) of the Indonesian Association for Cultural Studies (Asosiasi Kajian Budaya Indonesia, AKBI) was held successfully on Friday, 16 October 2026, at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) in Surakarta (Solo). The congress re-elected Dr. Yuliawan Kasmahidayat, M.Si., as Chair of AKBI for the 2026–2029 term. He previously served as the association’s inaugural chair.
In his report as the outgoing chair, Dr. Yuliawan outlined the programs implemented during the previous term and proposed several initiatives for the coming years. Since its establishment three years ago, AKBI has successfully built a solid organizational foundation, including legal registration, an official logo and anthem, a website, professional networks, and annual national and international academic seminars.
Looking ahead, members have proposed that AKBI undertake more impactful initiatives, including the establishment of a Professional Certification Institute (Lembaga Sertifikasi Profesi, or LSP) in the fields of culture and cultural tourism. “We will further develop this proposal in consultation with AKBI members and the executive board,” Dr. Yuliawan said.
Prof. I Nyoman Darma Putra, M.Litt., a member of AKBI’s Supervisory Board, expressed his appreciation to the outgoing executive board and congratulated Dr. Yuliawan on his unanimous re-election as chair for another three-year term.
“Let us make AKBI a shared home—a place where we can be creative and work together to enhance professionalism in cultural studies education,” said Prof. Darma, who serves as Head of the Doctoral Program in Cultural Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Udayana (Unud).
Prof. Darma also expressed his hope that AKBI would play an active role in the Indonesian Independent Accreditation Agency for Humanities (LAMHUM), contributing to improvements in the accreditation of Cultural Studies programs across Indonesia.
On the occasion, Prof. Darma extended his heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Habsari Ismail, Head of the Doctoral Program in Cultural Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, UNS, who served as the local organizing committee coordinator, for providing the facilities needed to ensure the smooth running of the event. He also thanked the AKBI executive board and congress committee for their excellent work in organizing the hybrid event.
Representing the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Cultural Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Udayana, Prof. A.A.N. Anom Kumbara, Prof. I Nyoman Darma Putra, and I Wayan Sukaryawan attended the congress in person at UNS Solo.
AKBI was first established in October 2023 at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Udayana.
